Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of planning a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a supporters' gathering that could enable a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
