The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Developer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the upcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Change Comes After Mixed Response
The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to the game's disappointing initial reveal last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the necessity for a more defined vision.
Ismailer stated that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Key Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they hired an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I know you all just wrapped up your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the recent updates. Previously I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to continue.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the past twelve months, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was enlightening. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the requirement for a more distinct identity.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the criticism to consideration and reimagined the title with a renewed vision - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our audience.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS increases every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce the new hire as the incoming Lead of 31st Union. Following some time of talks, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His management and experience in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having spent the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most well-known franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Please join me in welcoming him soon. We are all excited to keep observing the progress of Project ETHOS in the time to follow.
David
Experience of the Incoming Head
Brinkman presently holds the role of senior developer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at major gaming companies in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Game Information and Concept
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a early access event. At the time, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative evolution on the category."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description explains. "Challenge the opponents with new abilities, risks, and challenges that evolve every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and pray your team can achieve the highest spot? The option is yours."
The game lacks an official launch window or platforms, but fans can anticipate further news as development advances.
